Jansen Jardin awakens slowly from hibernation to deliver this beautifully succinct collection of music from under-the-radar enthusiasts, Karel Arbus & Eiji Takamatsu. Arbus, who hails from the Western Australian town of Esperance (famed for it’s surf and as the location of the Skylab satellite crash in 1979), has been working as a carpenter in Gifu, Japan, since 1997. Eiji Takamatsu, born in Hawaii to Japanese parents, moved to Japan after finishing university to help out at his Uncle’s onsen in Karuizawa. In 2008, whilst enjoying a boisterous après-ski in a Nagano bar, the pair met and discovered a shared passion for the work of John Barry and Klaus Schulze. So it came to pass, the masters of hot baths and smooth wood began sending musical ideas back and forth and occasionally meeting up to drink more sake, whilst further developing the delicate, concise musical scenarios that make up ‘Some Backland Plaza’.
